Following the YouTube clatter for their video "Knives and Pens," Black Veil Brides' first release, We Stitch These Wounds, finds the band venturing into territory that's been tried by the likes of Bullet for my Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold. With staccato guitar blasts and emo-screamo vocal stylings, Black Veil Brides fits comfortably into the genre while not necessarily breaking new ground. Songs like "Perfect Weapon" contain all the metal cliches that one song could offer, with its melodic harmony riffs, double bass pumping, and vocal melodies. The title track, "We Stitch These Wounds," brings an apt melody as vocalist Andy Six utilizes screaming in all the right spots. Songs like "Sweet Blasphemy" actually do a great job at giving the band some modern rock flavoring. Surprisingly, one of the discs finer moments come courtesy of the ballad "The Morticians Daughter." Here, Six delivers a poignant vocal as acoustic guitars abound. When the orchestration hits, the cut proves to be one of the disc's best. What the band does well is play their instruments. Each member demonstrates over-the-top abilities with some of their best moments coming instrumentally. Black Veil Brides have embraced metalcore while flavoring the vibe with glam and melodic rock. We Stitch These Wounds is a great way to deliver their angst. ~ Steven Douglas Losey
